Each sip of wine tells something about the summer from which it was born. Hints, memories, colors. To be free to express itself, releasing its fragrance, wine must be “raised” with care, starting with the grapes and, before that, the soil in which the vines sink their roots. A matter of philosophy: let the soil speak, first of all. The varietal, the terroir. The grape variety. The individual hillside. Until the final miracle, which can be savored by uncorking a bottle: feeling the beauty of the perfect marriage between the vine essence, the season and the wisdom of aging. Nature and culture, in the service of excellence: the sublime, in its extraordinary simplicity.
Keyword: fidelity. It’s the compass of the Marchisio family, for decades committed to a bet that smells sacred. The mission: to obtain the maximum natural expression of Roero’s native vines, respecting organic regulations and enhancing the rows through Steiner biodynamic practice. An ancestral technique, which first and foremost is concerned with restoring fertility to the soils. The rest is a consequence: plants that are more robust and resistant in the face of adversity. And greater olfactory and gustatory breadth of the nectar produced: more intense aromas, deep and long-lived wines. Persuasive, easy to drink, surprising. And never the same: each vintage, rightly, tells a different story.
The unwavering defense of the vineyard’s natural profile is accompanied by the continuous evolution of winery techniques: zero chemistry, no added sulfites, only native yeasts. Virtually zero sulfur thanks to work in the vineyard, where copper and sulfur have been replaced by orange and rosemary essential oils. Lately, then, the amphora winemaking for Nebbiolo and Arneis has been making waves, not to mention the happy “exotic” experiments with Pinot Noir and Riesling. A soft touch, that of ceramics, which adds up to more classic vinification and aging in steel and large barrels.
What makes the difference is the style: rigor, essentiality, magical balance between research and tradition. Upstream, the absolute quality of the raw material wins out: fantastic grapes, from vineyards regenerated by organic green manure during the winter months and then energized with the prodigious spring sprinkling of the typical Steiner manure, that of horn manure. Thus was born an international success, as well confirmed by the many awards and exports to difficult markets such as Finland and Canada, where label selection is very careful and regulated by strict restrictions.
Acknowledged success, but not ostentatious: the Marchisio’s certainty that they are in the right, consistency with their values, is enough. And it is not just a matter of ethics, or feelings. What speaks, every time, is the extraordinary personality of the wines: unmistakable, genuine and surprising, different from all the others. They convey an inexhaustible vitality: an enchanting frequency. And if you close your eyes, they tell you about their summer. As in art masterpieces, where it is the land itself that speaks: perhaps with dreamy eyes, like Van Gogh’s.
